Although it has stepped up its women's hockey efforts -- including organizing a 3-on-3 women's event during the 2020 All-Star Game -- the league office is still hesitant to formalize a partnership.
The league was established in 2015 with four teams, and has since grown to six teams: the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, and a to be named team in Toronto.
The CWHL had four teams in Canada, one in suburban Boston and a sixth in China, and its decision after 12 seasons was seen as a major blow to the sport.
Each team was set to play six games against its five rivals for a total of 30 games, 15 at home and 15 on the road. In order to minimize travel, each North America-based team made one road trip to China to play a three-game series.
The Canadian government, through the Department of Canadian Heritage (minister of sport), funds Hockey Canada. In 2011-12, it received over $3-million from the federal government. Its sponsors and marketing partners also include some of this country's major companies.
The #CWHL is folding as of May 1st 2019. I just spoke with the league and there are NO plans to merge with the @NWHL as was rumoured in the past.

In the CWHL, salaries ranged from CDN$2,000 to $10,000 per season. In the NWHL salaries in the first season of operation (2015-16) ranged from US$10,000 to US$26,000 per season, but these were reduced in the second season, often by 50 per cent.
