In certain cultures, a surname (i.e. family name) is said first when pronouncing a person's name. Leela's family appears to follow the same tradition, with "Turanga" being their surname, not "Leela". This is why it (intentionally) appears on the mailbox of their sewer home.
According to Groening, Fox seemingly never really wanted Futurama to succeed. Futurama was canceled at Fox because the network spent years — essentially from before the show even hit television sets — walking it down the road to the chopping block. The scar is a fake. But in episode one when Abel is born Tara is talking about the hole in his heart and Gemma says something about CHD (congenital heart defect) - the family curse. But the show never resolved the story line as far as I know.

Born in the 20th century in New York City, Fry is depicted as an unintelligent man-child in his 20s. He is a pizza delivery boy who, during the first few seconds in the year 2000, falls into a cryogenic tank while delivering a pizza to Applied Cryogenics.
