Vancouver has more population squashed into a tiny area, with other cities jammed up next to it making a large urban area known collectively as "The Lower Mainland". I found it VERY claustrophobic. Also more crime. Calgary gets way more sun, and is cheaper to live in.

It's a fun place to visit during the Calgary Stampede. It's OK to visit for a few days and then head to Banff of Jasper. It's a clean city with a nice shopping street and a good park near downtown.
The BC average salary is much lower then Alberta but GVA has the most expensive RE in Canada. It's much cheaper to live in BC interior but most the of jobs are related to mining/oil/gas. Keep in mind right now that Alberta's economy is in the tank.

Calgary is good but the city isn't as vibrant. I like the outdoorsy lifestyle opportunities better in Calgary but I would give that up to move to Vancouver. Toronto is a dump. The nature surrounding the city of Vancouver is beautiful but Vancouver is a pretty challenging place to live.
The biggest difference between the two cities for me is that Vancouver has a way bigger population of people in their late 20s and 30s. Victoria has a young University population and then there's a bit of a gap.
Toronto has Lake Ontario to regulate it's weather and Vancouver has the ocean. Expect a lot of humidity in both winter and summer. Ottawa is less exciting than either city but much more affordable. If you can handle the winters (we're colder than Moscow), it's a more laid back lifestyle.

Don't get me wrong, Edmonton is a great city and I had a great time. But winter can be brutal and it is very isolated. Vancouver has a great climate, lots to do, is not nearly as isolated. One caveat, Vancouver is one of the most expensive places to live in all of Canada.
