On the west coast and almost half way up is Mumbai, the gateway to both North and South India.
Delhi was a part of Punjab Empire before independence. At the time of independence, many Punjabis left their home(now Pakistan) and came to the other side of Punjab. Delhi was on the border of Punjab. But Delhi, culturally and historically, has always been with Punjab, in Punjab.
Punjab, state of India, located in the northwestern part of the subcontinent. It is bounded by the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir to the north, Himachal Pradesh to the northeast, Haryana to the south and southeast, and Rajasthan to the southwest and by the country of Pakistan to the west.
Others say there is a North, South, East, and West India. For the sake of discussion, I will use six regions, adding Central and Northeast India to the above list.
Delhi is located in Northern India, at28.61°N 77.23°E. The city is bordered on its northern, western, and southern sides by the state of Haryana and to the east by that of Uttar Pradesh (UP). Two prominent features of the geography of Delhi are the Yamuna flood plains and the Delhi ridge.

There are 17 railway zones in India now. Indian Railways is divided for administrative convenience into several regional railways. Until recently there were 9 zones, and this structure had not changed much for four decades. Recently, 7 new zones have been created, giving a total of 16.
Mumbai lies at the mouth of the Ulhas River on the western coast of India, in the coastal region known as the Konkan. It sits on Salsette Island (Sashti Island), which it partially shares with the Thane district. Mumbai is bounded by the Arabian Sea to the west.

Central India also includes north Telangana and central UP. Southern India: Southern Konkan, southern Desh (Pune region) and southern Marathwada are in South India as they have strong historical and cultural connections with Goa and Karnataka, both of which are geographically and culturally in South India.
East India is a region of India consisting of the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and also the union territory Andaman and Nicobar Islands. West Bengal's capital Kolkata is the largest city of this region. The Kolkata Metropolitan Area is the country's third largest.
What makes a state Southern? According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the South is composed of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia—and Florida.

The state is surrounded by Gujarat to the north west, Madhya Pradesh to the north, Chhattisgarh to the east, Telangana to the south east, Karnataka to the south and Goa to the south west. Maharashtra is the third largest state by area in India.
