For example, obtaining a perfect score on the old SAT (2400) puts you in the 99th percentile, meaning you scored higher than 99% of all other test takers. An 800, the lowest possible score on the 2400 scale, would be in the 1st percentile, meaning you scored higher than 1% of the other test takers.
That said, there are many situations in which SAT test prep would NOT be worth the money: If your scores are up in the 75% range or higher, there's really no reason to take a test prep class in an effort to improve your scores.
All things considered, Khan Academy's SAT prep program is high quality. It's a great introduction to the test and elevates the bar of free SAT materials. Students unable to afford books or prep programs have a useful resource to train for the test.
Kaplan isn't a very good source for SAT prep. I used the 8 Practice tests book and it was very different from the real test. The questions in there are harder and the answers are less different from each other. The explanations for the right answers are very vague and unconvincing.
SAT Prep Classes – PriceBetween these two courses, the Princeton Review has a slightly better price— $1,599 before any discounts. By contrast, Kaplan's Unlimited Prep With Coaching comes to a slightly steeper $1999 price for entry.
A 1200 is an above average score that places you in approximately the 74th percentile of all high school students taking the exam. A score of 1200 makes it possible to apply to the vast majority of schools throughout the nation and be competitive for admission at a sizable number of colleges.
On the ACT, 34 and up is the 99th percentile. So if you score 34 or higher, you're in the top 1% of test takers!

The highest possible score you can earn on the SAT is 1600 points. To get this score, you have to get a perfect 800 on each of the two sections: Math, and Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW). These scores are then totaled to give you a composite score of 1600.
The maximum score on the SAT is a 1600. Out of the two million students who take the test every year, only about 500 get the highest possible SAT score. This elusive perfect score catapults you to the top of high school academic achievement and can be a big boost to your college applications.
