Like her elder sister Cassandra, Jane Austen left no descendants, but their large army of brothers did have in most cases a significant amount of progeny.
Five years later, in 1788, the portrait that for many people does authentically reveal Jane's facial features came into existence. During a visit to a great-uncle, Francis Austen, it is said the 13-year-old Jane, by now having begun writing, was painted by Ozias Humphry (1742–1810).
Austen inherited £1000 from him, which gave her a little financial independence but, like her sister, she never married.

Sanditon itself is a fictional town - an appropriation of the seaside resorts which were gaining popularity in the period - but many of the locations used in Sanditon are local to the Jane Austen Centre in the South West of England.
The book fragment ends when Mrs Parker and Charlotte visit Sanditon House, Lady Denham's residence. There Charlotte spots Clara Brereton seated with Sir Edward Denham at her side having an intimate conversation in the garden and surmises that they must have a secret understanding.
The last episode of Sanditon saw that Sidney and Charlotte finally confess their love for each other. Following which, Sidney breaks upon Charlotte that he has plans to honour his word and has to get married to Eliza Campion.
The latter part of the manuscript was written in pencil because Austen became too weak to hold a pen,and on 18 March her illness forced her to abandon the novel altogether.
After Jane Austen's death in 1817, her family is said to have destroyed some of the letters she wrote to them to avoid any potential embarrassment. Cassandra Austen set about burning many of her sister's letters in an attempt to preserve her legacy, and cut out passages of others to prevent them leaking.
