There has never been a reported shark attack on the River but it is said that many have gone missing.

“I've seen sharks but not as far up the river as Wisemans Ferry,” he said. “I was surprised we caught a mulloway there too, they usually don't go in the fresh water either.”

There are two swimming spots - The Basin (below), a lagoon protected by a shark net and an open beach on Pittwater. Both offer calm water, making them ideal for children. Aboriginal rock carvings are close by on the West Head Road.
Well you can't swim in the main harbour due to water traffic eg ferries, tugs, fishing boats etc. Ocean water really means in the ocean eg Manly Beach to Shelley Beach (people swim every day at 7am) or possibly Bondi (there is a ocean pool at the southern end).
Due to snags, cold deep water and poor water quality after rain, swimming in Lane Cove River is not advised.
Woronora RiverPrince Edward Park in Woronora is a fabulous family bushland swimming spot with picnic and play equipment, fishing jetties and the beautiful Woronora River to swim in while you listen to the cicadas buzzing and kookaburras laughing.

Put your fishing skills to the test, with mulloway aka jewfish, kingfish, bream, bass, tailor, and salmon present in the Hawkesbury river.
Southern Sydney

- Gymea Baths. Location: Gymea Bay. Type of fish: Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Flounder, Salmon, Bonito, Kingfish.

Nepean River (Darug: Yandhai), is a major perennial river, located in the south-west and west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The river flows north in an unpopulated water catchment area into Nepean Reservoir, which supplies potable water for Sydney.
Wisemans Ferry, about 70km upstream, has brackish water. The water is fresh by the time you reach the Colo River at Lower Portland.
About 80% of it comes from Warragamba Dam. The rest comes from a mix of other dams, the Hawkesbury Nepean River and Sydney Desalination Plant at Kurnell.
Sydney's river of life! The Hawkesbury River and its tributaries encircle Greater Sydney on the north side. Soon after being settled by Europeans, it became an important farming area and was the 'food basket' for the first settlement at Sydney Cove.
The spectacular Nepean River at Penrith is one of the region's primary natural attractions. The Nepean River is also a great place for fishing, swimming or simply enjoying a relaxing picnic on the river bank with family and friends.
The Nepean River is fed from a number of westerly flowing tributaries, including the Avon, Cordeaux and Cataract rivers. The Hawkesbury River becomes tidal near the confluence of the Nepean River and Grose River, about 4 km upstream of Richmond (NSW Public Works, 1987).
Dietary adviceFISH AND SHELLFISH SHOULD NOT BE EATEN if caught in Georges River and its tributaries upstream from Rabaul boat ramp at Georges Hall, including Prospect Creek, Cabramatta Creek and Chipping Norton Lakes.
Is recreational fishing banned in the Harbour? Recreational fishing in the Harbour has not been banned, but fishers are urged to follow dietary advice on the consumption of seafood from the Sydney Harbour, Parramatta River and other connected tidal waterways. Fishers can also continue to practise catch and release.
DON'T EAT THE FISH.Unfortunately, because of unchecked and polluted run-off from the upper reaches of the Georges River, the Fisheries people say fish from the Chipping Norton Lakes should not be eaten.
Residents can continue to fish in Botany Bay and the Georges River but should follow precautionary dietary advice when eating their catch. Investigations have found PFAS on and offsite at sites such as Botany Industrial Park, Sydney Airport and Caltex Kurnell.
The Georges River is a popular area for recreational fishing. Species present in the river include bass, bream, whiting, yellowtail, jewfish and flathead.
