Upon the arrival of Chuseok, families gather to make songpyeon (half-moon rice cake) and feast on japchae (stir-fried glass noodles and vegetables) and other representative traditional Korean holiday dishes. To celebrate Chuseok like a Korean, try making one of these six representative Korean foods.
Do not give: expensive gifts (Koreans will feel obligated to reciprocate with a gift of equal value), knives or scissors (they signify "cutting off" a relationship), green headwear, gifts with red writing (denotes death) or gifts in a set of four (denotes death).
Happy Mid-Autumn Festival. ?????!
Informal “How Are You?” in KoreanIf you're unsure as to whether or not to use the informal, ask the other person if it's ok to use ?? (banmal), which is the word for informal Korean. If you meet a close friend who you haven't seen in a while, ask “? ??? (jal jinaesseo)?”
Historically, the purpose of Chuseok – or Hangawi (???), as it's sometimes referred to as – was for families to gather together during the full harvest moon, which appeared in the sky on the 15th day of the 8th month, to celebrate and show gratitude to their ancestors for the fruitful harvest.
Chuseok is considered the biggest and most meaningful holiday among Koreans, and approximately 30 million people still travel to their hometowns. That's another reason why it is considered the busiest holiday.
They also celebrate unique holidays, such as Bounty Day, and, strangely enough, an American-inspired Thanksgiving. While various harvest festivals and days of thanks fill fall calendars around the world, Norfolk Island's Thanksgiving is actually based on the American tradition.
There are more Christians in South Korea (the Republic of Korea) than in many other Asian countries such as China and Japan, so Christmas is celebrated more widely. Unlike Japan, Christmas is an official public holiday in South Korea - so people have the day off work and school!
