As Ars reviews editor Ron Amadeo noted last year, RCS interest from carriers has been tepid, so Google has been rolling it out with limited support. Google said on Thursday that it has now completed its worldwide rollout of RCS and is moving to a new phase—end-to-end encryption.
Google's Messages app, the default text messaging app on most Android phones, has a chat feature built in to it that enables advanced features, many of which are comparable to what you can find in iMessage.
Google RCS chat on Android. Unfortunately, RCS doesn't work with iMessage. Someone on an iPhone will still see you as a green bubble, for example, instead of a blue one that says you're using iMessage. You'll get all the new features only if you're texting between RCS Android devices.
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a next generation SMS protocol that upgrades text messaging. Rich features like payments, high-res photo & file sharing, location sharing, video calls, and much more, are delivered to a device's default messaging app.
Yeah, but RCS can handle "fall back" which means it can send messages as SMS if you don't have strong data connection. RCS will charge you for messaging, calls, and even just LOOKING at your phone (if they could).
Speaking of Signal, Google has selected the Signal Protocol for its encryption implementation — just like WhatsApp. If you are texting with somebody who isn't using Android Messages (say, somebody using Samsung Messages or an iPhone), the fallback to either less-encrypted RCS chat or SMS will still work just fine.

Nick says that Apple iPhone holders are not going to be a part of those users. However, the multinational still needs to adopt RCS messaging at a certain point. This is because the GSMA mandates that brands can only use a 5G logo if they agree to make RCS their default mobile messaging platform.
The RCS service will not rely on cellular connectivity like SMS text messages does, meaning that you'll need a data connection in order to use it. This also means that you'd be able to use RCS from multiple devices – not just your smartphone. RCS offers many benefits compared to its predecessor, SMS messaging.
