The MOS, Rating, or AFSC is your given military
job/career, and each specialty has different
ASVAB requirements.

Meet the minimum Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) score: GS+MC+EI=170 or VE+MK+MC+CS=220 or VE+AR=110 MC=50. Be 28 years of age or younger.
The Air Force and Army have the lowest minimum AFQT
score (31) for
high school diploma holders, while the Coast Guard has the
highest (40).

High ASVAB scores in the 90 to 100-plus range open up new opportunities in intelligence and skilled positions such as mechanics and technical positions.
- Military Intelligence.
- Paralegal Specialist.
- Psychological Operations.
- Aviation.
Military requirements: Achieve at least a 200 combined score in the Arithmetic Reasoning, Mechanical Knowledge, Electronics Information, and General Science sections of the ASVAB.
For current AFQT scores, the reference group is a sample of 18 to 23 year old youth who took the ASVAB as part of a national norming study conducted in 1997. Thus, an AFQT score of 80 indicates that the examinee scored as well as or better than 80% of that nationally-representative sample.
The standardized score received by around half of the ASVAB test takers for each section is 50 or higher. Less than 20% of the test-takers earn a score of 60 or higher. Therefore, the average ASVAB score is 50.
AFQT scores are reported as percentiles between 1 and 99, and the score is relative: Your AFQT score indicates how well you did compared to the scores of a reference group. For example, if you score 71, that means you scored as well as or better than 71 percent of those in the reference group.
It is a very good score but falls just short of being a top score. It is high enough to be eligible for most all jobs, if not all. A score of 92 indicates a score that is in the 92nd percentile of AFQT scores among test takers who took that exam.

The Navy calls their enlisted jobs “ratings.” The Navy offers two programs: Guaranteed Job, and Undesignated Seaman. Again, whether or not you will be offered the job you want depends upon your qualifications, and the needs of the service. Undesignated Seaman can “strike” for a job after basic training.
Soldiers who are interested in improving their GT score should contact their local education center where counselors can enroll them in FAST or a BSEP using GoArmyEd, the Army's portal () for managing education services.
You can take the ASVAB as early as your sophomore year in high school. If you take the ASVAB as a sophomore your score will not be used for joining the military. Taking the ASVAB does not commit you to anything. A military recruiter may contact you after taking the ASVAB.
At the high end, a score of 97 it's pretty much useless, since you've far exceeded the requirements for all occupations in the Armed Forces. It's only good for bragging rights, but ultimately it'll not do very much good to talk up your ASVAB score.
The AFQT score is calculated by combining the standard scores of four subject tests: Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), and Word Knowledge (WK). The scores are shown as percentiles, which is a similar concept to the standard score scoring method.

It depends upon your qualifications and what jobs have current/projected openings. If the job you want is not available, your only choices are to choose a different job, or not enlist. The Air Force has divided all of their jobs into four aptitude areas (General, Electronic, Mechanical, and Administrative).
How Many Questions on the ASVAB? In total, the computer-based ASVAB has 145 questions, while the paper-based ASVAB has 225 questions. Both versions of the ASVAB are organized into a number of different subtests, all of which have a different number of questions that must be completed in a specific time limit.
General ASVAB Test-Taking Tips
- Read the directions carefully.
- Know what a question is asking you to do before looking at the answer choices.
- Read all the answer options before selecting one.
- Skip questions you don't know and then go back to them if you have time.
- Don't leave any questions blank.
Jobs in the Army
In the Army, an enlisted job is called a MOS, or military occupational specialty. If the job you want is not available, your only choices are to choose a different job, or not enlist if there is nothing else you prefer to do in the Army.Answer: A good ASVAB score would be a passing score, which would be anything above the minimum required score for the branch of the military that you are seeking to enlist in. For the Army, that would be any score above 31. For the Air Force, that would be any score above 36.
the “GT” score is an army composite score and it means General test, and an 89, is basically borderline mentally challenged, being just below the average of 90, for a general IQ score. So if you really mean AFQT you are quite smart, if you mean GT you need to do some studying.
As said, a 91 can get you damn near anything you want. Conversely, there's an abundance of prep books you can buy that will help you garner a few more points. Unless you want to be a nuclear tech I strongly recommend you shy away from the Navy as the Air Force offers comparable jobs with less BS.
81 is a good score to the recruiter, anything above a 50 is. It's considered an "Alpha", or quality applicant. As a test score, it's also pretty good. The raw score (AFQT- Armed Forces Qualification Test) determines whether or not he can join.
Composite scores are used by the different branches of the U.S. Armed Services to determine which military jobs (or Military Occupational Specialities/MOS) may be the best fit for you. These composite scores are only one factor in determining which military job is right for you.
Unfortunately, it is not a good score. ASVAB is based on a variety of skills such as word knowledge, math knowledge, mechanical skills, etc. The core is something called the Armed Forces Qualification Test.
