Spirit bears are rare white-coated black bears (Ursus americanus kermodei) that live in the coastal temperate rainforests of Northwest British Columbia. Their striking colour is caused by an uncommon recessive genetic trait.
White bearsThe Spirit Bears of British Columbia, Canada, represent a white animal that has great cultural meaning and is thought to be sacred. A subspecies of the American black bear (Ursus americanus), the Spirit Bear or Kermode bear (Ursus americanus kermodei), is not an albino.
They're also dangerous because they're skilled apex predators: they can easily outrun a human, and knock its head off with a swing of its pawed fist. Which means, cute as it may be, the polar bear is quite functionally the great white shark of the north.
According to native legends, spirit bears could swim deep underwater and lead people to magical places. Legend also has it that Raven, the Creator, made every tenth black bear on one island white as a reminder of the last ice age, which was 10,000 years ago.
Like most coastal bears, spirit bears play an important role in coastal ecosystems as they bring salmon from rivers into the forest to eat. The leftover remains of the salmon are then available for other animals that eat salmon (e.g. eagles, minks, etc.)
The major threat to this species is loss of pristine habitat from ongoing logging operations. Global warming is a long term threat that alters their balanced ecosystem. Reduction of salmon supplies by man made activities (e.g.: over fishing, pollution, etc.) also threaten the kermode spirit bear.
The bear represents your personal strength, independence, and power. Because bears are known to be wild animals, they are dream symbols that represent your own untamed habits and wild behaviors. Dreaming of bears also signifies yourself as a mother figure to the people you are closest to.
The Native Bear Symbol represents strength, family, vitality courage and health. The bear is thoughtful and independent, with little need for fellowship.
Color vision and night visionRods collect light, and cones interpret color. Bears particularly see colors on the blue end of the spectrum very well. They may not see reds as well as we do, but definitely better than deer. Deer see blues and greens especially well, but do not see reds well at all.
The Great Bear Rainforest is the last and largest tract of intact coastal temperate rainforest on Earth! It is home to an abundance of terrestrial and marine life, including rare species such as the iconic Spirit bear, donning white fur.
But the one thing we know for sure stands out: The fact that this grizzly bear's fur is white. White grizzlies are almost unheard of. Polar bears roam the Arctic, and the West Coast has Kermode, or spirit, bears — though they're a variant of black bear, and their numbers are estimated to be in the low hundreds.
Black bears come in more colors than any other North American mammal. They can be black, brown, cinnamon, blond, blue-gray, or white.
' We knew we were so lucky because white grizzly bears are unheard of,” said Clarkson told local media. Grizzly bears normally range in colouration from dark brown to blond, but a white bear is incredibly rare. Experts say the colouring is the result of a recessive gene in the cub – not albinism.
A movie based on the novel "Touching Spirit Bear" is in production, but doesn't have an official release date yet. Another important location in the book is the school yard.
Kermode bear: The Kermode bear (Ursus americanus kermodei, pron. KER-mode in English), also known as a “spirit bear” (particularly in British Columbia), is a subspecies of the North American Black Bear living in the Central and North Coast regions of British Columbia, Canada.
What does Cole say he would do to Spirit Bear? What does Edwin tell him? He says he would kill it. Edwin says that whatever you do to the animals, you do to yourself.
They're a subspecies of the black bear, born white when two dark-furred parents carry an obscure genetic mutation. The British Columbian government estimates there are 400 spirit bears in the province, and hunting them is illegal. (Learn more in National Geographic Magazine's 2011 feature article “Spirit Bear.”)
He's seen tremendous variation in bears' coloration, including a number of light colored brown bears he characterized as blonde. Blonde bears frequently have darker legs, he said, and color variations are often regional. “In the Interior, the Brooks Range, Nome, light-colored blondish bears are pretty common,” he said.
It is estimated that there are at least 600,000 black bears in North America. In the United States, there are estimated to be over 300,000 individuals.
At. oow are the most prized possessions of a clan. At. oow is literally translated as "an owned or purchased object" and can refer to land or sacred sites, celestial bodies such as the moon and sun, names, stories, songs, spirits and crests.
Most Native American tribes revere the bear. Like the turtle, each tribe's cultural view of the bear varies; however, at the core, the bear represents authority, good medicine, courage, and strength. The bear is said to be a healer and protector.
To strengthen Kermode protection, the British Columbia government recently extended its ban of white-bear hunting from the coast to the entire province.
Where do I go to watch The Great Bear Rainforest? The Great Bear Rainforest will be released to the public at designated IMAX theatres starting February 15th. We will be posting all presenting theatres on the film website: under “Theatres”.
The current estimate of the black bear population in British Columbia is 120,000–160,000. This is about one quarter of all black bears in Canada.
Their pale color comes from a mutation in the gene that produces melanin — similar to the human gene that generates redheads with fair skin. Just like gingers can have parents both without red hair or fair skin, spirit bears come from “normal” black bear parents that both carry the recessive genetic mutation.
The player must have at least 35 bees to reach Spirit Bear. She is located between the Coconut Field and the Pepper Patch, and in front of the Extreme Memory Match.
