By John SteinbeckThe end of East of Eden can literally be summed up in one word: timshel. What is timshel, you ask? Is it something you find on the beach? Is it a type of pasta?
Cherubim were placed east of the garden, "and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way of the tree of life". Genesis 2:10-14 lists four rivers in association with the garden of Eden: Pishon, Gihon, Hiddekel (the Tigris), and Phirat (the Euphrates).
Family, Love, and Loneliness. East of Eden is a novel about families—marriage, parenthood, succession, inheritance, and sibling rivalry make up the bulk of the book's conflict. Underlying all of these conflicts is the repeated suggestion that there is no love without pain, rejection, and loneliness.
As an allegorical story, East of Eden is a modern-day retelling of the first four chapters of the Book of Genesis in the Christian Bible. Steinbeck's story explores universal feelings such as jealousy and the theme of what characters inherit from past generations.
After Adam joins the cavalry and Cyrus moves to Washington, Charles stays on the farm and farms it to death. At some point, Charles gets a scar on his forehead while pulling up rocks. Charles dies while Adam is in California. He leaves his assets to Adam and his wife.

East of Eden Book Review: My Take, Why its worth a readBut it's not an easy read, it's challenging and can be slow at times. However, if you have the patience and will to make it through, I promise it will make you think. It will change how you see humanity and how you think about good and evil.
Steinbeck furthered the parallels in the naming of various characters. Just like Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden was banned in Kern County, California because it was considered obscene due to his use of profanity; and a character, Cathy, becomes a prostitute.
John Steinbeck is known for many extraordinary works, but East of Eden is something so spectacular that I struggle to understand how a fallible, self-oriented human mind could concoct it. Based on the Biblical story of Cain & Abel (Genesis 4), Steinbeck's work could best be described as a parallel of the infamous tale.
