To fit the entire picture of a wide-screen movie on a 4:3 TV and maintain the proper dimensions, the size of the movie is reduced. Therefore, since the width of the movie is wider than its height, black bars are seen at the top and bottom of the screen.
Netflix licenses TV shows and movies from studios around the world. Though we strive to keep the titles you want to watch, some titles do leave Netflix because of licensing agreements. Whenever a TV show or movie license is expiring, we consider things such as: Are the rights to the title still available?
Some TV shows and movies on the Netflix service may be bordered by black bars, often called wings or letterbox. These black bars are due to the aspect ratio the TV show or movie was filmed in - if you're seeing them, it means the title was filmed in an aspect ratio that isn't a perfect fit for your screen.
Setting the picture size (aspect ratio) for your TV type
- Open the Main Menu (left arrow <), choose Settings and press OK.
- Choose Television and then press the right arrow 6 times.
- Choose Screen Aspect Ratio and High Definition and press OK.
- Choose 1080i on high-definition screens - unless the TV can't display 1080i.
- Choose Continue and press OK.
Use the aspect ratio button on your TV's remote to adjust the size of the image. Pan-and-scan fans can use it to fill the entire screen with an image, while widescreen fans can keep it on the normal setting to preserve the film the way it was shot.
Luckily, a lot of TVs can adjust the aspect ratio automatically based on the feed it's receiving. Again, all TVs are different, but look for the aspect ratio adjustments in your picture settings. Make sure it's set to "Auto-Adjust" or "Normal" instead of "Stretch," "Full Screen," or "Zoom."
What aspect ratio is 1920x1080? 1920 x 1080 is a 16:9 aspect ratio. By default, smartphones, DSLRs, and most modern camcorders record video at 1920 x 1080.
Anamorphic video and square vs.An example of this might be a 16:9 display showing video stored with a frame size of 1280x720 pixels. Both have the same aspect ratio. An example of this might be a 16:9 display showing video stored with a frame size of 720 x 480 pixels.
DV is 720x480 pixels, and the DV widescreen aspect ratio is 16:9.
16:9 (1.77:1) is a widescreen aspect ratio with a width of 16 units and height of 9. Once seen as exotic, since 2009, it has become the most common aspect ratio for televisions and computer monitors and is also the international standard format of digital television HDTV Full HD and SD TV.
Common resolutions in the 16:9 ratio are 1920 x 1080 pixels and 1280 x 720 pixels.
Widescreen movies are better at this by nature because they allow the picture to fill nearly your entire field of vision. This is why films have been shot this way -- to draw you in and make you feel like you're part of the action. Most widescreen movies are shot in what is called 2.40 (21.5:9) aspect ratio.
All TVs sold today have an aspect ratio of 16:9, which means that if the width is divided into 16 equal parts, the height of the TV or picture should be 9 parts. 21:9 is much wider, so parts of the screen need to be filled with black bars above and below the image in order to fit most TVs.

Most theaters have a wide-screen, locked down since times immemorial. These boxes, while still wide screen, are comparatively less wider than movie theaters, lending themselves to a 16: 9 aspect ratio. What this means is, a TV Show shot in 16:9 will fit perfectly on a TV Screen.
16:9 Ratio DefinedSo examples of 16:9 displays would be 16 inches wide by 9 inches high, 32 widgets wide by 18 widgets high, and 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high. An image has a 16:9 ratio if its width-to-height ratio is equal to 16/9, or 1.78. A 16:9 ratio can also be represented as 1.78:1.
16:9 aspect ratio resolutions: 1024×576, 1152×648, 1280×720, 1366×768, 1600×900, 1920×1080, 2560×1440 and 3840×2160.
16:9 is the native aspect ratio of most high-definition LCD monitors and TV's (15:9 and 16:10 are very similar). It is 78 percent wider than it is tall, and fully one-third wider than a 4:3 screen. 16:9 widescreen monitors are ideally suited to display HD video signals.
For instance, an image sized at 1920 x 1080 pixels has an aspect ratio of 16:9, and an image sized at 1280 x 720 pixels also has a ratio of 16:9.
Aspect ratio is defined as the ratio of width to height of an image. A 4:3 aspect ratio means that for every 4 inches of width in an image, you will have 3 inches of height. Unlike the 4:3 aspect ratio, a 16:9 aspect ratio is 78% wider than high.
It's a digital television format 3840 x 2160 px, which is in accordance with a basic widescreen 16:9 aspect ration assigned for home users. These dimensions are equal to a double of Full HD (1920 x 1080). There are 4K televisions and screens on market, mostly in UHD resolution.
Full screen or fullscreen refers to the 4:3 (8:6) aspect ratio of early standard television screens and computer monitors. The 4:3 aspect ratio became the standard in film because it mirrored film stock and was the easiest to use.
More commonly referred to as maximized, window fullscreen is any window or program that is using the entire screen but is still a window. When running a game in window fullscreen mode, you may notice a performance increase and be able to switch between other programs quicker.
A DVD labeled as "Widescreen Anamorphic" contains video that has the same frame size in pixels as traditional fullscreen video, but uses wider pixels. If an anamorphic DVD video is played on standard 4:3 television without adjustment, the image will look horizontally squeezed.
Widescreen (13.333 in x 7.5 in.) provides more slide surface area for the content, so that is the best choice for presentations. Widescreen won't fit on an 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper without you having to scale it down.
Removing Black Bars
- Check your high-definition TV remote control while you're playing the movie to see if there's an aspect ratio control available. Set it to "Full Screen" mode or something similar.
- Go through the video options on the DVD you're watching. See if it gives you an option to watch the movie in full screen.
A standard template is almost square, with a 4:3 aspect ratio. If you're showing a PowerPoint presentation on an older projector, iPad, or tablet, you'll need a Standard template. For all others projection types, including laptops, TV monitors, or modern projectors, you'll need a Widescreen 16:9 template.
