Get varied outcomes with the Air Still but it is all good and some of it (double distilled - 5 times filtered) is just outstanding, as good as anything i ever purchased. You wont see me in the bottle shop anymore. These things are excellent little units.
The Turbo 500 still is the most advanced small-batch distillation system in the world extracting an incredibly high 95% of potential alcohol from the wash at 93% purity. No other alternative distillation system will give you these results.
There are no recognisable “tails†from the T500. All the Alcohol produced, except the 50mls of heads, will be high quality. When the Distillation is finished, turn the Boiler power off and disconnect from the power outlet.
A Reflux Still is essentially a Column Still. It typically generates a much higher proof, yet much less flavorful alcohol, than a pot still. The width and height of your reflux system will greatly determine the purity of your product and the speed that it produces distillate.
Even if you've never ordered it by name, you're probably familiar with a boilermaker. At its simplest, a boilermaker is a beer and a shot, taken together, in one of a few different ways. You can find boilermakers on menus across the country from the dive-iest of dive bars to high-end cocktail bars.
Height: 420 mm. Max Fill Height: 345 mm.
Actual steps to produce the cleared wash ready for distilling:
- Clean and sterilise your fermenter.
- Add 21 litres of water to your fermenter at 40°C.
- Add 6KGs white sugar and stir well to dissolve.
- Add Classic yeast and Turbo Carbon and stir well.
- Leave fermenter at 20°C room temperature to ferment.
The T500 when distilling requires a constant flow of cold water. This is the way that it keeps a constant temperature between 78° and 82°C which is necessary to produce good quality alcohol.
When to Stop DistillingExperienced moonshiners generally run their stills until the alcohol from the wash has reduced to somewhere around 10-20 proof. It is not worth the time and energy to distill further to separate the little remaining alcohol from the water.
Makes: 25 L wash – approx.14.4% ABV once fermented.
It's fine to use more than one pack of Turbo Clear as this won't hurt the wash.
The T500 allows you to collect an astonishing 95% of the possible alcohol from the wash and produces a purity of up to 93% making it the perfect base for flavouring into any spirit or liqueur you like.
The nitrogen (from the nutrients) reacts in an alkaline environment to form ammonia. The more residual nitrogen and the more alkaline the mash, the more ammonia results. This ammonia then corrodes the copper and results in a "blue-ish distillate which tastes not good at all.
Put them into still base when adding the new wash. Remove when discarding spent wash after distilling, rinse and re-use next time.
The first distillation in the wash stills takes approximately 4 to 7 hours. The wash still has a temperature of approximately 173°F (78°C), the evaporation point of ethanol. The whole heat input is used for the evaporation of the alcohol. The distillation usually ends after 4 hours.
Keep it increasing, maintaining a range of 175 - 195 degrees Fahrenheit for as long as possible. Turn off the heat when it reaches 212 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature at the top of the column will tell you about your alcohol vapor as it begins to condense.
What is it? Distilling Conditioner is a de-foaming agent which when added to your wash in the still boiler before distilling, releases carbon dioxide and stops foaming of un-fermented sugars during distillation.
The main purpose of a thumper keg is to speed up the distillation process. It lets you distill a high-proof spirit without running it through the still multiple times. The other purpose of using a thumper keg is to add botanicals to your spirits.
