As has been said, Ilford is not dangerous. Neither is Kilburn come to that. There are better areas to stay in, though; he trouble is that they will cost more as they are nicer and more convenient to the sites. Ilford is perfectly safe, and quite pleasant (eg Valentines Park and mansion).
