REMOVE SHIPPING SCREWS FROM TOP BURNERS. All top burner valves operate counterclockwise to open the valve and clockwise to close the valve. The good news is Wolf ranges don't depreciate that much and there's a great second hand market for them. Tons of people want a Wolf range but only a few can afford a brand new one so the demand keeps prices high. That equates to a great value and a luxury appliance that's worth the money.
We built our house in 1990 and changed the cooktop once, so a Viking appliance (or the previous Thermador) is not “worth it” unless you have reason to believe that you will live in that house for a while. A Viking cooktop is about 3–6 times more expensive than a Whirlpool cooktop and the food won't taste any different.
You can still manually light nearly every modern gas stove with a match or lighter, even if the igniter is broken. Matches are safer and will work better than typical cigarette lighters. Light match. Hold very close to the holes in the center of the burner that fire usually comes out of.
Most newer gas ranges and ovens don't have pilot lights. Instead, the gas is ignited by an electric ignition system. In this type of system, an element becomes hot and glows like the filament in a lightbulb when an electric current passes through it. The heat from the filament lights the gas.
Modern ovens / gas ranges / water heaters don't need pilot light as they use piezo-electric ignitors. So you have to look for a button to press to ignite the oven. So just turn and press the knob and, few seconds after the fire lit, release the knob and adjust the temperature.
Cooking Do's
- DO use timers and clocks.
- DO keep your oven in working order.
- DO use oven mitts and handles.
- DON'T use ovens with damaged doors.
- DON'T overload your oven.
- DON'T ignore a wobbly cooker.
Locate and light the pilot light: It's often labeled “pilot light,” and can be a small hole in the bottom of the oven, front center near the door opening, or in a back corner. If you don't see it inside the oven, it could be in the back of the broiler compartment.
A proper pilot flame should be blue with a yellow tip and should be strong enough to cover about 1/2 inch at the end of the thermocouple tip. If the flame is too strong and improperly adjusted, it will be blue but may be noisy and lift off the thermocouple, causing improper furnace operation.
In the case of a power outage, you can light the surface burners with a match on your electric ignition gas or dual fuel range or gas cooktop. Hold a lighted match to the burner, then turn the knob to the low position. Use extreme caution when lighting the burners this way.
If your gas-powered stove was made in the last few decades, it most likely requires electricity to light the burners during normal operating conditions. But you can bypass the electric ignition during a power outage by using matches to light the burners instead.
Use a grill lighter or long match to light the pilot light valve at the bottom of the oven. Some ovens are designed to be manually lit at each use. In this case, slowly turn the temperature knob while holding the flame to the pilot light valve. Close the oven door after the pilot light ignites.
