Fighters get paid what they're worth, and their worth is determined by how many asses they can put in seats and how many PPVs they can sell. The sad fact is most fighters don't sell tickets or PPVs. The few exceptions are people like Chuck Lidell, Conor McGregor, GSP and Rhonda Rousey.
McGregor will earn at least a $3 million purse for headlining the main event of UFC 246 against Donald Cerrone, as reported by ESPN. However, when speaking with ESPN's Ariel Helwani earlier in the week, McGregor predicted that his total earnings from the event will swell up to an estimated $80 million.

It's not too hard to get a fight in the UFC. Win 8 or so fights at the local level against bums to pad your record and you can probably get a contract. Now fighting at the top level in the UFC, say getting a title shot, is incredibly difficult since you are no longer hand picking fights at the local level.
UFC referee earn $500k, if they regularly appear in the main-card fights. In 2019, a sports source revealed UFC main-card or pay-per-view fight referee make $10,000 – $25,000.
And you may be competing in a sport that you know even less about. The bottom line in amateur MMA is; promoters need to make money. Amateur MMA fighters cannot be paid, so every ticket sold goes to pay for the production and the rest goes into the promoters' pockets and those dollars are very few and far between.
