Warren Buffett became a player in the investment game at the wee age of 11, eventually using cash he earned from his paper route to buy some farmland in his home state. According to the latest Forbes count, the so-called Oracle of Omaha is currently tipping the wealth scales at $73.1 billion.
Buffett has previously called banks good businesses because they can earn very high returns on tangible capital. These are just a sort of companies Buffett has sought out throughout his entire career. Bank of America's return on tangible equity has ranged between 8% and 14% during the past five years.
Technically speaking Berkshire Hathaway is not a hedge fund, it is a holding company. Although Berkshire operates similarly to a hedge fund in terms of investing in stocks and other securities, it does not take performance fees based on the positive returns generated every year.

Berkshire Hathaway's investment portfolio includes such well-known companies as Apple Inc., Bank of America, and Coca-Cola Company. Buffett's value approach to investing has enabled him to grow Berkshire Hathaway's share price exponentially over the decades.
Despite additional shares, Berkshire Hathaway's stake value in General Motors fell to $1.77 billion in the third quarter—compared to 2.02 billion in the second quarter. Buffett usually increases a company's shares in his portfolio when the stock goes down.
The vast majority of Buffett's donated money goes to the Seattle-based Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which, according to its website, seeks to "unlock the possibility inside every individual."
