The areas around WEM are mainly residential so no worries. Whyte Avenue is a nice part of the city - a somewhat funky vibe with shops & restaurants. With all due respect, Edmonton, and indeed all Canadian cities are generally much safer than most American cities - most crime here is non-violent.
Clareview is actually really safe. I've been all over this city both living and working as a security guard and trust me, Clareview is perfectly safe. It's not too bad.
It's a great place to live if you have young children or want a quiet life. There are many work opportunities that weren't there when Sherwood Park was a bedroom community. The recycling program is way better than Edmonton. That being said transit and recreation opportunities could be improved.
