The first full-length motorway in the UK was the M1 motorway. As a result, there is no M7 (as no motorway follows the A7), and when the A90 was re-routed to replace the A85 south of Perth, the short M85 became part of the M90.
The honour goes to the Preston bypass, most of which was incorporated in the M6, which roughly follows the A6, doing so closely N of Preston.

So with an economic model that was flawed from the start, the M6 Toll was built and then the operators compounded the flaw by jacking up the toll to levels that put so many people off using it, they went bust and the banks took it over. As I remember it, the original toll was about £2; it is now over £5.

In the case of the M6 Toll, the alternatives are either to use the regular M6 or the nearby A roads. However, as these are all liable to peak time congestion, the choice is often pay up or hold up. For other tolls, satnavs include an option to avoid toll roads, which will make it easier to find an alternative route.
If you're travelling along the M6toll heading further afield northbound or southbound, you'll pay at one of two mainline toll plazas. If you're driving northbound (e.g. towards Stafford or Telford M6/A34/M54) you'll pass through our Great Wyrley toll plaza between junctions T6 & T7.

When paying tolls for bridges and tunnels may be some places accepted credit cards.
No fixed cameras though. Be careful at the junction bit with the M42 where there are loads of cameras.
The M25 is named after the A25 because at its oldest point (the section traversing Surrey) it follows the path of the older A25. The M23 is named after the A23 but although there is an A24 no M24 has been built alongside it.

The M10 was a motorway in Hertfordshire, England, running for approximately 3 miles (4.5 km) from the M1 motorway at junction 7 near Hemel Hempstead to the A414 North Orbital Road at Park Street Roundabout, just south of St Albans.
Answer: A motorway just relates to the A road that it's relieving pressure from. The reason there is no M7 is that the A7, which runs from Carlisle to Edinburgh has no need for a motorway to relieve it. The way the roads are organised, the numbers were set up centred on London.
