Former winner Geraint Thomas says the decision to miss this year's race was mutually agreed between him and Team Ineos Grenadiers. The 2018 champion had made a second yellow jersey his goal for the season but "didn't feel in the right shape to be truly competitive".
Geraint Thomas says he didn't want to ride the 2020 Tour de France in support of another rider. The Ineos Grenadiers rider was initially expected to head to the Tour as joint leader with reigning champion Egan Bernal, before the team made the surprising announcement that Thomas would not be racing.

Geraint Thomas has confirmed his schedule as he returns to racing next month. The Welshman has just five race days in his legs this year before the coronavirus lockdown hit, but he still has his sights set on the Tour de France.

Big teams such as BMC Racing, Quick-Step, Astana, Movistar, Team Sky will spend between 75 per cent and 80 per cent of their budget on riders. Pro continental riders make anywhere from $26,200 to $171,200. If riders can get past this point, however, the payment gets more lucrative. The ultimate goal for many cyclists, however, is to make it onto the UCI World Tour, where the minimum wage is $2.35M.
