It's not illegal for ducks or any bird, at least where my friends and I hunt, but it is generally frowned upon. Also worth noting, if you are dispatching a wounded duck that's trying to swim away but can no longer fly it's both perfectly legal and socially acceptable to shoot it on the water.

Duck hunting by yourself can be an extremely enjoyable time. Sure, going out with a hunting guide, friends or family members is great but to occasionally get out duck hunting all on your own can be a very enjoyable experience.
Duck hunters commonly use camo clothing, a blind bag, binoculars, a thermos, flashlights, decoy gloves, mechanical decoys, and other accessories. But none of these items is an absolute necessity. Consider what you would like to have and what you can afford, and then assemble your gear accordingly.

Many people believe that it is absolutely necessary to have decoys to be able to duck hunt. Although having decoys often does not hurt your ability to harvest your limit of ducks, and often times it helps, with some planning it is possible to still bag ducks when duck hunting without decoys.

On smaller, confined waters, a spread of six to 36 decoys should be sufficient. On larger waters or dry fields, hunters should put out as many decoys as practical. I never heard of anybody scaring ducks or geese away because they used too many decoys. Typically, the more, the merrier.

And we never will. Live pigeon shoots are banned or covered under the cruelty laws of most American states. They are banned by statute in 14 states, and in nine others, including Maryland, courts or attorneys general have concluded that they violate the cruelty law or wildlife laws.

generally geese are shot with a shotgun while they are flying. you probably can't get within shotgun range while they are on the ground. most people set up a blind and shoot the geese as they come in to feed.
Duck hunters are only allowed to use a shotgun, 10 gauge or smaller, that carries no more than three shells. If the shotgun carries more than three shells, the hunter is required to “plug” the gun so that only three shots can be fired before reloading.
Even on private property, Maryland requires hunters to have a license. The license usually lasts a year, with an exception of a nonresident three-day waterfowl and small game license.
The first Saturday and Sunday in September are designated as Waterfowler Heritage Days in Alberta. The youth can only hunt waterfowl species for which there will be an open season in that WMU. Regular bag limits and possession limits apply.
