The Colony of Singapore was a British Crown colony that existed from 1946 and succeeded by the State of Singapore in 1959. When the Empire of Japan surrendered to the Allies at the end of World War II, Singapore was returned to the British in 1945.
Singapore became an independent republic on 9 August 1965.

The lion was chosen as it is a powerful and historic symbol of Singapore's status as the Lion City and symbolises three national values: courage, excellence and strength. Singapore's name is itself derived from 'Singa Pura' (which means "Lion City").
The National Flag consists of two equal horizontal sections, red above white. White symbolises pervading and everlasting purity and virtue. The crescent moon represents a young nation on the ascendant, and the five stars depict Singapore's ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.

Chan Mali Chan is a widely known folk song attributed to both Malaysia and Singapore. It is a cheeky, flirtatious love song, which has gained standing as one of the traditional “national” songs of both countries. Ketipung payung in the chorus… of the song is a term of endearment.
Looking back at time, many say that the eighties was a golden era in Singapore. It was a period of stable economic growth and peaceful society with racial and religious harmony. Inflation was low, as seen in the relatively cheap HDB flats, public transport or vehicle ownership.
