The Murray cod is a large grouper-like fish with a deep, elongated body that is round in cross section. It has a broad, scooped head, and a large mouth lined with pads of very small, needle-like teeth. The jaws of the Murray cod are equal, or the lower jaw protrudes slightly.

The Murray Cod is Australia's largest freshwater fish. The biggest recorded was 1.8m long and weighed 113kg! The cod's size depends on its habitat, with those living in smaller waterways reaching at least 60cm and between 3kg to 4kg.Silver Perch is a listed threatened species and deliberately fishing for them from waters other than listed impoundments is illegal.
Fish present in the river are Murray cod, golden perch, trout cod, silver perch, freshwater catfish, bony bream, blackfish, carp, redfin, goldfish, western carp gudgeon, flat-headed gudgeon, Australian smelt, southern pygmy perch, Murray hardyhead, oriental weatherloach and mosquitofish.
Is the golden perch endangered?
The fjords contain sea water so there are many different species of fish living there. The most common species are coalfish, cod, haddock, pollack, tusk, mackerel and redfish. You can fish from the shore or hire a boat. Fjord fishing is available throughout the year.
A bottom feeder is an aquatic animal that feeds on or near the bottom of a body of water. Examples of bottom feeding fish species groups are flatfish (halibut, flounder, plaice, sole), eels, cod, haddock, bass, grouper, carp, bream (snapper) and some species of catfish and shark.
Cod are demersal fish found in huge schools confined to temperate waters in the northern hemisphere. Atlantic cod are found in the colder waters and deeper sea regions throughout the Northern Atlantic. The Pacific cod is found in both eastern and western regions of the Pacific.
This is especially important now that all cod over 75cm must be released alive. Also, fishers can play their part during the closed season. Anglers are reminded that a minimum legal size limit of 55cm and a maximum size limit of 75cm applies. The catch limit is 1 fish in rivers and 2 in impoundments.
