As of today, the average price of an ELD is about $495 per truck according to the FMCSA, with a range of $165 to $832 per truck annually. This makes ELDs much less of a cost factor than other expenses such as fuel, tractor-trailer equipment, permitting costs, and liability insurance.
Here is the official list of ELD mandate exceptions from the FMCSA's website: Drivers using paper RODS no more than 8 days out of every 30 day period. Driveaway-towaway drivers who transport empty vehicles intended for sale, lease, or repair, as long as the vehicle they are driving is part of the shipment.
Everyone who is required to keep logs must be compliant by December 16, 2019. Companies can install an ELD in any CMV (commercial motor vehicle), even if it's not required for that vehicle or operation. If an ELD malfunctions, drivers can use paper logs for up to 8 days.
ELDs are required to capture and record all driving events, but a driver can make an edit to their log anytime he or she feels an entry is incorrect. The rule permits drivers to make annotations indicating the change, but the original recorded driving status is not erasable.
The standalone KeepTruckin Electronic Logbook App is compliant with USDOT / FMCSA rule 395.8 regarding a driver's record of duty status and Canada's commercial vehicle drivers hours of service Regulations. What happens when a driver unplugs the ELD in their vehicle? We know it happens, but it's hard to track. You never again have to worry that an unplugged ELD will result in a violation; you will be alerted right when the driver connects again.
According to the FMCSA, in the event of team drivers, the ELD must display the data for both co-drivers who are logged into the system. The issue that arises for team drivers is when a driver wants to use their BYOD cellphone or tablets to login to the ELD app to track their hours.
Since an ELD must create a log every time the vehicle is moved, unassigned logs pose an added responsibility to the motor carrier. According to FMCSA regulations, all unassigned drive time records must be either annotated or reassigned to a driver.
