1.a. Provisional Intern Permit (PIP)
Allows an employing agency to fill an immediate staffing need by hiring an individual who has not yet met the subject matter competence requirement needed to enter an intern program. Available in the areas of Multiple Subject, Single Subject, and Education Specialist.Primary Intervention Program
The US government also provides financial aid to people enrolled in alternative certification programs. If you're interested in teaching in a rural or inner-city school, you can also get hired without formal education training. Alternative certification teacher programs can be online and classroom-based.
Without certification, you cannot teach in public schools: it is your license to teach! Before you enroll in an accredited degree program, you will want to make sure the program prepares you for teacher certification.
The minimum guideline for substitutes is two years of documented college coursework, not necessarily in education. There are no exemplary substitute teacher programs. Substitutes have the same licensing requirements as teachers, but there are no training standards.
How to Become a Substitute Teacher
- Earn a bachelor's degree.
- Apply for a substitute teaching license, if required in your state.
- Take the tests required for substitute teacher licensure, if necessary.
- Once you are licensed, apply to your local school district's substitute teacher pool.
California Certification Sources for Substitute Teachers
When applying for one of the substitute teacher permits, you'll typically need to pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).Substitute teachers must hold a valid teaching license and endorsement and have an associate degree plus at least 60 hours of credits from an accredited college or university. They can serve as a short- or long-term classroom substitute.
The CBEST, for example, can be waived if a student scores at least a 500 on the SAT English exam and at least 550 on the SAT math exam, or scores a 22 or higher on the ACT English exam and a 23 or higher on the ACT math exam.
To remove the user credentials from Credential Manager:
- Click Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager.
- Select the Windows Credentials option.
- Then click Remove from Vault (depending on which version of Windows you are running).
Earn an associate's or bachelor's degree in early childhood education. Complete a student teaching internship in a preschool classroom. If required, take the state's tests for preschool teacher certification and apply for a teaching certificate. Begin applying to open preschool teacher positions.
Substitute teaching is an excellent career opportunity for many types of people, but it isn't for everyone. Schools are always in need of qualified substitute teachers, so as long as you have a Bachelor's degree, no criminal record, and are good with children, you will likely be hired.
Another factor that contributes to the potential difficulty of the CBEST is the passing standard. Scores of 20 to 80 points are awarded for each one, and a passing score for a single CBEST section is 41. Candidates can still pass the exam if they do not pass one or more sections, but only if they score at least a 37.
Substitute Teachers perform the instructional and classroom management processes for teachers who are absent for a day or longer periods of time. Their duties include taking attendance, explaining homework, and maintaining classroom cleanliness. Candidates need to be flexible in their availability.
Teaching Credential Fee
When you fill out your application for your teaching certificate in California, you will pay an application fee of $50.00. There is also an additional $1.38 service fee charge. Alternative certification programs may cost more - up to $100.You may work as a substitute teacher for up to 60 days for any one teacher during the school year (or up to 20 days for an individual teacher in special education classrooms).
In California, the minimum education requirement for teacher certification is a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. You must also complete a teacher preparation program approved by the CTC. An approved program provides both educational curriculum and fieldwork.
