Each carrier only has limited spectrum, and AT&T and T-Mobile haven't sold 2G-only devices for a few years now. You will still find 2G GSM service in some rural areas, because it's still supported by rural carriers, but you can't rely on the system as a nationwide network.
A 2G only phone will be slow, but it will be able to make calls and send texts, though it won't be able to access the internet as we know it.
The maximum speed of 2G with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is 50 Kbps. The speed is 1 Mbps with Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE).

As a result of being from the early 00's, 2G data is very slow indeed. GPRS can go up to 114 Kbps (0.1 Mbps) and EDGE can get as high as 237 Kbps (0.2 Mbps). To put this in perspective, 3G can handle up to 42 Mbps and 4G can go even higher than that.

CDMA was developed by Qualcomm. The CDMA brand name encompasses two different standards: IS-95 aka CDMA One, a 2G digital service, and its modern 3G successor CDMA-2000. As far as i can tell, just about every CDMA carrier is using the later standard. “3G” Data is provided by Evolution Data Optimized (EV-DO).
4G networks use frequencies below 6 GHz, but 5G uses extremely high frequencies in the 30 GHz to 300 GHz range.

Any SIM will work in any device
First, you need to understand that any SIM be it 2G, 3G or 4G will work in any device. You can use a 4G SIM card in a 3G or 2G phone or a 2G or 3G SIM card in a 4G phone. Anything is possible.If you only ever see a 2G, Edge, E or GPRS, then it is likely you have a 2G device or that your device settings are locked to 2G. If you see a 3G, H+, 4G or LTE on the top of your phone (next to the phone's signal bar indicator), then you have 3G or 4G compatible device and should be fine.

Google maps will still work on 2G. However, it's really slow and most of the time, it won't speak directions. Once the map is loaded, it'll work even without data. You can load your maps on WIFI and then just drive.
Both the government and communication companies approved the 3G standard. The first pre-commercial 3G network was launched by NTT DoCoMo in Japan in 1998, branded as FOMA. It was first available in May 2001 as a pre-release (test) of W-CDMA technology.
