In the six years following his disappearance, it is revealed that Michonne has assumed leadership over the Alexandria community and was pregnant at the time of Rick's supposed demise; she is now a parent to Rick's daughter Judith (Cailey Fleming), as well as their own child together, Rick Jr. (RJ) Grimes.
He awakens from a coma after a life-threatening gunshot wound to find the world overrun by zombies, or "walkers" as they are referred to within the story. In the comic book series, Rick had the most appearances until he was killed off in Issue 192 in 2019.

Amy dies in Andrea's arms of blood loss and trauma after all the walkers have been killed. In the episode "Wildfire", Andrea cradles Amy's body and shoots her in the head after she reanimates. Amy is then buried on the hill, on her birthday.
During the climax of the episode, The Governor is about to kill Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) when The Governor is mortally wounded by Michonne (Danai Gurira) and later shot in the head by Lilly Chambler (Audrey Marie Anderson), who incidentally also kills him in the comics.
The fate of Rick Grimes the screen character remains up in the air (quite literally, since he was last seen boarding a helicopter of cryptic origins) but in the comic book saga Grimes meets his end (as widely feared) with the fatal gunshot wounds he suffered in a sneak attack by a living, breathing assailant.
Instead, he explains that he's not used to walkers and needs Michonne to kill his zombified family for him. When Michonne discovers this she stabs Virgil in the leg while his former community members overwhelm him before he's able to escape. They agree to spare him as long as everyone's allowed to leave the island.
After Negan appears to have joined her group, he fatally slashes Alpha across the neck and decapitates her.
The Walking Dead will reportedly end in a few seasons time due to the source material drawing to a surprise close earlier this year. The zombie drama, which airs in the US on network AMC, is midway through its 10th season, but according to sources close to the show, it will end with its 12th in March 2022.
Pre-apocalypse, Negan was married and worked as a high school coach with as colorful a vocabulary as he has in the ongoing Walking Dead pages. He soon finds out that his wife has cancer — and readers find out as much when Negan tells his mistress as much, who dumps him on the spot.
Like Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes before her, Danai Gurira's Michonne has exited The Walking Dead — and just like Rick, she's alive and well, with future adventures in the greater franchise universe all but certain.
