Bottom line: There's no astronomical reason to celebrate New Year's Day on January 1. Instead, our modern New Year's celebration stems from the ancient, two-faced, Roman god Janus – for whom the month of January is also named. One face of Janus looked back into the past, and the other peered forward to the future.

The year zero does not exist in the Anno Domini (AD) system commonly used to number years in the Gregorian calendar and in its predecessor, the Julian calendar. In this system, the year 1 BC is followed by AD 1.
A monk called Dionysius Exiguus (early sixth century A.D.) invented the dating system most widely used in the Western world. For Dionysius, the birth of Christ represented Year One. He believed that this occurred 753 years after the foundation of Rome.
Year 666 (DCLXVI) was a common year starting on Thursday (link will display the full calendar) of the Julian calendar. The denomination 666 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the Anno Domini calendar era became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years.
AD 1 (I), 1 AD or 1 CE is the epoch year for the Anno Domini calendar era. It was the beginning of the Christian/Common era. The preceding year is 1 BC; there is no year 0 in this numbering scheme. The Anno Domini dating system was devised in AD 525 by Dionysius Exiguus.
In the modern calendar, we label all years with B.C. (before Christ) or A.D. (anno domini, or "in the year of our lord"). There is no "zero" year -- in this system, the year Christ was born is 1 A.D., and the year preceding it is 1 B.C. Besides B.C. and A.D., some people use B.C.E.
6 BC – 4 BC: Birth of Jesus of Nazareth (see Chronology of Jesus' birth and death, Anno Domini, and Common Era for further details). 1 BC: Emperor Ai of Han dies and is succeeded by his eight year old cousin Ping.
What would cause this? 1970-01-01 is the date of "zero" in Unix (Android) systems. Any 1969-12-31 dates would be zero adjusted for a western time zone. This would mean that the date is not getting recorded correctly.
Epoch, also known as Unix timestamps, is the number of seconds (not milliseconds!) that have elapsed since January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 GMT (1970-01-01 00:00:00 GMT). In many modern programming languages, date objects make use of epoch as a starting point from which they compute the inner date value.
Encoding time as a numberThe Unix epoch is the time 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. This can be extended backwards from the epoch too, using negative numbers; thus 1957-10-04T00:00:00Z, 4472 days before the epoch, is represented by the Unix time number −4472 × 86400 = −386380800.
