Gran Turismo Omologato means Grand Touring Homologated, meaning certified as Grand Touring by FIA(Federation Internationale d'Automobile). Some chided Pontiac for using the same name as the thoroughbred sports car Ferrari 250 GTO.
The Big Bang in the evolution of modern muscle cars is the 1964 Pontiac Tempest GTO. This is where it began: a midsize automobile with a big, high-power V-8 marketed as an integrated high-performance package -- the very definition of the muscle car.
Pontiac chief engineer John DeLorean and fellow engineers Bill Collins and Russ Gee had found that the 389 V-8 easily fit in the newly styled mid-size Pontiac Tempest and turned it into a sizzling high-performance car. Something fresh lurked behind the 1967 Pontiac GTO's gorgeous new grille: The standard engine was now a 400-cid enlargement of the 389-cid V-8. Compression was unchanged, and the base version, with its four-barrel carburetor, again made 335 horsepower.
