Shoe boxes give your shoes the highest level of protection from dust, sunlight and temperature extremes that can sap leather shoes of their flexibility. Boxing vintage shoes and boots after stuffing and wrapping them will help preserve fine leather, cork and other organic materials.
If it's an expensive electronic or collectable item: keep the box if you plan to re-sell it or trade it in, in the near future (2-3 years). The box will help with the re-sale value. But if you aren't in the business of trading in electronics frequently, you don't need to keep it longer than the return/warranty window.
Dry rot is the process in which leather degrades due to the lack of moisture in the material. This process usually occurs if your leather footwear is kept in warm, dry conditions. Dry rot can also happen if your shoes are being stored in extreme conditions — very hot or cold temperatures as well as high humidity.
On average you should keep your shoes for between 8 and 12 months before replacing them. This averages to around 300 to 500 miles for running shoes. One good indicator that your shoes are worn is when the support and cushioning start to become compressed and the material doesn't bounce back the way it used to.
The zones that are alright for shoe racks and cupboards are South West and West. Avoid North, North East and East zones. Try not to keep shoes in the bedroom.
Ways to Reuse Cardboard in Your Home:
- Make it into a planter by lining it with a plastic bag with some holes poked in the bottom.
- Paint cardboard boxes or line with fabric to make nice storage containers.
- Cut out small circles and paint them to make coasters.
2 | ALL SHOES NEED TO BREATHE AND BE AIRED OUTFresh air helps nourish the material, dry out any odours (cedar wood also helps with this), and keeps your shoes supple and fresh after each wear. This will help maintain the shoe structure and promote shoe longevity.
Some people use them to store items they rarely use. Others use them to store things such as cocktail napkins, candles or party supplies. And they're especially effective at corralling all of the lids to your plastic containers. Photos: Clear plastic boxes also work well as a tool to sort and organize old photographs.
Use the boxes as decorations: You can use shoe boxes as decorations alone or as decorative boxes for storage. All you need to do is glue fabric to the shoe boxes or paint them. Book storage: Shoe boxes create excellent motivation for reading. Encourage children to decorate each box, and create themes for each box.
Types of CardboardThe other type is called paperboard (also known as chipboard). It is a single layer of grayish cardboard used to make items, such as cereal boxes, shoe boxes, and other packages. Paperboard is sturdier than a typical sheet of paper, but it can be torn much more easily than corrugated cardboard.
Any type of corrugated cardboard can be used in compost as long as it is broken into small pieces. Flat cardboard – This type of cardboard is most often found as cereal boxes, drink boxes, shoe boxes, and other similar flat-surfaced cardboards.

All clean cardboard, paperboard (cereal box), and paper can be recycled. If it is wax or foil coated, it cannot, but a majority of coatings are now plastic, not wax or foil, and can be recycled. If paper is shredded, please place in a clear plastic bag in your recycling bin.
Tissue paper should be composted. Tissue paper fibers are too short to be recycled again. Alternatives to shiny wrapping paper: Get creative and wrap gifts in newspaper, old maps, or kids' drawings.

How to take care of your shoes
- air out your shoes after each wear for at least 24 hours.
- do not wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row.
- avoid direct sunlight when airing out your shoes. This will help with fading.

To prevent the growth of mold, add a pack of silica gel to the shoe storage containers in order to remove dampness. Shoes that are light in weight and are made of fragile materials such as; espadrilles, summer shoes and cork soles tolerate molds very poorly.
The slightly stiffer cardboard will help position the shoe in its proper form, and the material will still breathe and allow moisture to escape. It's not nearly as good as cedar shoe trees, but it's way better than using nothing.
On average, shoes will last about eight to 12 months with regular, everyday wear. Of course, athletic or work footwear may not last as long due to the more demanding use. Knowing the signs of worn-out shoes, such as wear on the outsole, heel and upper, is important.
