The country completely banned plastic bags when other countries around the world started imposing taxes on plastic bags. Offenders smuggling plastic bags can even face jail time. But you won't see plastic bags floating around streets, hanging from trees, and plugging up drains in Rwanda today.
Thanks in large part to the absence of plastic waste, UN Habitat declared Rwanda's capital city of Kigali as one of Africa's cleanest in 2008. Rwanda is using investment and innovation to become cleaner and save the environment, and it's also using drones to save lives.
The Bangladesh government was the first to do so in 2002, imposing a total ban on lightweight plastic bags. Between 2010 and 2019, the number of public policies intended to phase out plastic carryout bags tripled.
Rwanda is one of the safest destinations in Africa, particularly for solo travelers. Crime is relatively low, with visitors sometimes experiencing petty crime, and locals are welcoming, friendly and hospitable. Pickpockets are active in crowded places, such as markets, and hire cars may be broken into for valuables.
Almost all plastic shopping bags are made out of polyethylene, a petroleum-derived polymer. The process used to manufacture plastic shopping bags is called blown film extrusion. First, polyethylene beads (or resin) are loaded into a hopper, which deposits resin into the barrel, which also contains a screw.
Individuals bring collected plastic waste to Plastic Bank recycling collection centers, where the plastic waste is exchanged for goods or Blockchain secured digital tokens. Plastic Bank's app is free to download and the blockchain system offers a way for locals to get paid outside of traditional currency.
By African standards Kigali is an exceptionally safe place. You have nothing to worry about walking around the city during the daytime.
The plastic bag ban prohibits retailers from providing single-use, lightweight polyethylene plastic bags (less than 35 microns). This includes degradable plastic bags (as opposed to compostable biodegradable bags made from plant starch).
Kenya – no plastic bags. As of 28th August 2017 plastic bags are banned in Kenya. The ban includes plastic bags of any kind (including Ziploc) brought into the East African nation by tourists. In other words: all plastic bags are now illegal in Kenya.
As of June 2019, plastic bags are not allowed in Tanzania, as the country steps up in the global movement against single plastic use. However, ziplock bags specifically used to carry toiletries are permitted as they are expected to remain the permanent possession of visitors and to not be disposed of in Tanzania.

Kenyan Government on Monday warned that from Aug. 28, anyone caught with plastic bags, would be arrested, charged or fined between 19,417 dollars and 38,834 dollars. Kenya announced a ban on the use of plastic bags in March, giving manufacturers a six-month grace period as the order takes effect on Aug. 28.

Rwanda is synonymous with mountains and scenic landscapes, celebrated for its gorgeous national parks, historical and cultural attractions. Kigali offers much more, from stunning architecture, museums, shopping, amazing restaurants and hotels, to elegant cuisine and friendly people.
Rwanda has a temperate tropical highland climate, with lower temperatures than are typical for equatorial countries due to its high elevation. Kigali, in the centre of the country, has a typical daily temperature range between 12 °C (54 °F) and 27 °C (81 °F), with little variation through the year.
When Kenya implemented its ban on plastic bags in favor of reusable polypropylene bags in August 2017, authorities used threats and fines to ensure success.
The law bans the use, manufacture and importation of all single-use plastic bags into the country. Travellers coming into Kenya with duty-free plastic shop bags will be required to leave them at the airport although the government has confirmed that re-usable ziplock bags continue to be allowed.
In Rwanda, there are two rainy seasons, the first from January to April and the second from October to mid-December. In between the two rainy seasons is a short dry season characterized mostly by sunshine and some light clouds. Even during the dry season, there is occasional light rainfall in Rwanda.

Rwanda can be as expensive and as cheap as you want it to be. We have seen lodges where you sleep for €750 per person per night, but have also slept in places where we only spend €6 per person per night. Activities make Rwanda an expensive country, it's up to you if you do them all.
Short, tight or revealing clothes should be avoided. And our advice would be to avoid wearing shorts – most Ugandan women would not wear these; they wear skirts or dresses that usually cover the knees. A long skirt or loose-fitting trousers are good in the heat and will protect you from the sun.

Rwanda is one of the countries that produce tea in Africa. Covering hectares of land are tea vegetation, rich greenery – plenty of lush green plantations. Rwanda is famous for its quality of tea along with the natural beauty of the tea garden and surroundings.
To greet someone: When entering a room it is common courtesy to shake hands with everyone present. If sitting when a new person enters you should stand when shaking the new person's hand. When greeting a closer friend or family member you hug (and kiss on the cheek if you are female) three times, alternating sides.
The culture of Rwanda is varied. Unlike many countries in Africa, Rwanda has been a unified state since pre-colonial times, populated by the Banyarwanda people who share a single language and cultural heritage. Music and dance are an essential part of Rwandan ceremonies, celebration, social gatherings and storytelling.
