The American pit bull terrier is not shown at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show because the breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club. Westminster is an AKC dog show, and only AKC dogs are represented. Both these breeds are easy to confuse with another, very similar breed, the Staffordshire bull terrier.
The Best in Show at the Westminster Dog Show does typically does go on to compete in some of the more lucrative dog shows later in the year, including the AKC National Championship, which awards $50,000 to its champion.

Claire, a Scottish deerhound, has been named best in show at the National Dog Show. The tall, gray dog is the first in her breed to win the competition, which started in the late 19th century and has been televised on NBC for the last 18 years.
A 2-year-old male bulldog named “Thor” nabbed the prestigious Best in Show title at the 2019 National Dog Show on Thursday. The adorable pup — whose registered show name is GCHG Diamond Gold Majesu Pisko Bulls — bested more than 2,000 canines from across the country to earn the title.
