Airline crew use this term, slightly differently. For them, a layover means an overnight stay while a connection refers to a shorter stop, but for fliers and travel providers, it's ok to use these two terms interchangeably. But if you're redeeming miles for a flight, airline agents will reference this terminology.
If the missed connection is the airline's fault (a delayed initial flight due to mechanical problems, for example), the airline should rebook you on the next available flight. If the next outbound flight is the following morning, the airline should either book you on another airline or provide accommodations and meals.
Personally I doubt most airlines would wait more than 15 minutes or so, unless you were a very, very good customer of theirs or your group comprised a significant amount of the passengers on the flight (e.g. 8 passengers out of 50 seats). Remember, they're making the other passengers unhappy by waiting for you.
