Kindergarten is not compulsory in Victoria but most children attend at least the second year (four-year-old kindergarten) – to develop social, mental and physical skills in preparation for school.
The learning is led by a teacher. Victoria will be the first state or territory in Australia to introduce funded Three-Year-Old Kindergarten for all children. Funded kindergarten means the government will help the kindergarten service with the cost of your child attending.
Preschoolers (3-5 years of age)
In 2020, it will cost $455 per term for a child to attend one of our kindergartens. A child can attend up to 15 hours of kindergarten per week. There are 4 terms in the kindergarten year. Currently, kindergarten for 2020 is free as the State Government is covering the cost of Term 4 fees.

- Information about yourself and any other parents, carers or guardians in your child's life.
- Details of people who can collect your child.
- Your child's birth certificate or other identity documents.
- Your child's medical health and immunisation status.
Pre-school in Victoria is relatively unregulated and not compulsory. Pre-school is offered to three- to five-year-olds. Attendance in pre-school is 93% in Victoria. The year before a child is due to attend primary school is the main year for pre-school education.

How Old Is Your Child? For the most part, educators define preschool as the 2 years before a child begins kindergarten. Some preschools set a minimum age for when they'll accept kids—usually, they have to be 3 by December of the academic year, although some will go as young as 2.
From 2022, families across the rest of the state will have access to five hours a week of kindergarten programs for three-year-olds. This will increase up to 15 hours a week by 2029.

3 day programs – This is generally the most “safe” option for kids if you're not ready for a full time, 5 day per week program and most kids start out here.
Children must go to school until the last day of the school year in which they turn 16. This is usually the end of school year 11. Your child is then required to continue in education or training until at least their 18th birthday.
Junior Year is Grade 11 in the USA, so 11 + 6 is 17. Now, that said, most students will start Junior Year at age 16 and turn 17 at some point during the year or the ensuing Summer Vacation.
Grade 1 is age five turning six by 30 June in the year of admission.

Children can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn 5, on or before 31 July that year. By law, all children must be in compulsory schooling by their 6th birthday.
Students enrolled to Grade 10 are usually 15–16 years old.
By the end of Grade 1 she should have learnt to recognize and sound all the letters of the alphabet, including simple words and sentences. By the end of Grade 1 she will be able write all the letters of the alphabet, including simple words, sentences and stories.
Grade R is compulsory, but not all primary schools offer grade R. Grade R may also be attended at pre-school facilities. Other grades that can be completed at a pre-school centre include grade 00 and grade 000 (although the 000 and 00 designations are not universally applied).
