Shelties are extremely loyal to either one person or one family. Shelties do not like to spend time away from their people. A Sheltie that is left alone all day without companionship while his people go to work is usually not a very happy little dog. Shelties are an emotional breed.
Male Shelties have a major moult once a year before summer, while female Shelties moult before summer and after every heat cycle (every 6-8 months if you don't have her spayed). As a puppy your Sheltie will hardly shed and won't need any grooming. His fur is short and he's yet to develop his undercoat.

They all 3 get a good bath about every couple months with some wonderful smelling doggie shampoo. Leaves a good scent on them.. My dearly beloved shelties now passed on never smelled bad either except at the end of summer when they were really needing a bath.

The perfect sized lapdog, many Shelties love to cuddle in your lap and enjoy hours of stroking and belly rubs. In most cases, Shelties are notoriously loyal and loving with their owners, while reserved around strangers, which makes your relationship with them extra special.To do this, say "speak" and do something that you know will make your Sheltie bark, such as having someone ring the doorbell or clapping your hands and getting excited. Praise him when he barks. Once you've gotten him to bark on cue, then introduce the word "hush" or "quiet" and offer him a treat.
Mine are bathed every 4-6 weeks. In between, I groom with dry shampoo and leave-in conditioner. I trim ears and feet about every 1-2 weeks.
