Short for Compact Disc Read-Only Memory, a CD-ROM is an optical disc that contains audio or software data whose memory is read-only. A CD-ROM Drive or optical drive is the device used to read them.
You can reinstall the drivers for the CD/DVD drive by going to Start, Control Panel, System and Security, System and then clicking on Device Manager. Expand CD/DVD-ROM Drives, then right-click on the device and click Uninstall.
Unlike IDE, SATA uses a simple and thin connector to carry data. Your motherboard will ship with several SATA cables, so take one of these from the box. Plug it gently into the rear of the SSD.
The serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) Slimline DVD-ROM Drive is an internal tray loading DVD-ROM drive. It is a 12.7 mm slimline form factor DVD-ROM drive that is capable of multiple sessions. This drive also reads type II (removable from cartridge) DVD-RAM discs.
An Optical Drive refers to a computer system that allows users to use DVDs, CDs and Blu-ray optical drives. DVDs have a storage capacity of 4.7GB and can be used to store data for various uses. For you to write content/data to a disc, you will need a blank recordable DVD disc.
Stands for "Serial Advanced Technology Attachment," or "Serial ATA." It is an interface used to connect ATA hard drives to a computer's motherboard. They also use smaller, thinner cables, which allows for better airflow inside the computer. SATA cables can be as long as one meter, while PATA cables max out at 40cm.
Two Ways to Recover Data from Hard Drive That Won't Boot in Windows 10/8/7
- Create a bootable disk. Prepare an empty USB.
- Boot from the bootable USB. Connect the bootable disk to PC that won't boot and change your computer boot sequence in BIOS.
- Recover files/data from a PC/laptop hard drive that won't boot.
You can use a USB hard drive enclosure, which is a special “box”-like device that you slide the old drive into. You can also use a USB hard drive adapter, which is a cable-like device, connecting to the hard drive on one end and to a USB in the new computer on the other.
Replacing the ATA drive with a SATA drive you will need the SATA drivers for your system unless the bios is set to IDE emulation. Windows won't recognize the drive without the drivers installed or IDE emulation turned on.
If you have an IDE drive, whether it's a hard drive or CD/DVD drive, and your motherboard has a SATA connection, you can still connect the IDE drive to the motherboard. For under twenty dollars, you can purchase an IDE to SATA adapter to convert an IDE connection to a SATA connection to connect to the motherboard.
Use a LiveCD or LiveUSB and an External Hard Drive
Use the LiveUSB to boot the computer with the dead drive. It will boot into the operating system on your LiveUSB instead of your computer's operating system. Plug in your other USB HDD so you have some place to save the files. The main difference between IDE and SATA is that the IDE provides a parallel connection to connect the storage device to the computer bus while SATA provides a serial connection to connect the storage derive to the computer bus.
Reinstall or Update Driver in Device Manager

Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the optical drive listed, then click Uninstall. Exit Device Manager then restart your computer.Press the Windows Button and E simultaneously. In the window that appears, on the left side, click on This PC. Right-Click on your CD/DVD Drive and click on Eject. Is this what you are referring to?
Installing software using a USB thumb drive

- Select all files and folders, then right-click and select Copy.
- Insert a USB thumb drive into a USB port on the computer that has a CD/DVD drive.
The Difference Between DVD ROM and DVD RAM Disks (or Discs)
DVD drives provide video and data storage; your system can include an internal or external DVD drive. Add an external DVD burner or hard disk DVD recorders. DVD ROM and DVD RAM disks are not the same.
