In most games, you shouldn't see a noticeable performance difference with Shadowplay, 5% is typical, 10% in the most demanding cases. In SLI mode, the performance impact is up to 20%.
The software tested will degrade performance from 100% (impact to delivered frames), so the lower the percentage, the worse the framerate. NVidia's ShadowPlay retains almost 100% performance throughput on the nVidia GTX 780 Ti we tested. Frankly, 98.21% total throughput is insanely impressive.
OBS Studio is a great program for advanced users. It can be configured to your needs as a recording program and even create a professional-level final product for sites such as YouTube and Twitch. It's also pretty low impact on frame rates for budget systems. Novice users, however, should look elsewhere.
The Shadow Time button allows you to set how much is recorded and kept in a temporary folder as you continue to play. You can choose from anywhere between a minute to 20 minutes. The moment you hit Alt + F10, it will save those specified minutes.
Shadowplay and AMD Raptr use GPU instead of CPU.
If OBS and the game are competing for GPU resources, both will have fps drops. If you cap the fps to 144, OBS and the GPU will not be competing for recources, resulting in OBS being able to achieve 30fps (which it currently is unable to do, judging from the log) and the game having a more steady fps.

AMD is using an overlay setup similar to ShadowPlay for capture of screenshots and video, including capture of the desktop and non-game applications. ReLive also establishes the same default hotkey as ShadowPlay – Alt-Z – but changes are possible through the interface.

A higher bitrate improves the quality of a video at the cost of increasing the file size. It works in correlation with the image resolution. The higher the resolution of your video the higher bitrate you'll need to make it look good.
1080p videos at 60 fps: 4,500 – 9,000 Kbps. 1080p videos at 30 fps: 3,000 – 6,000 Kbps.
Recommended video bitrates for HDR uploads
| Type | Video Bitrate, Standard Frame Rate (24, 25, 30) | Video Bitrate, High Frame Rate (48, 50, 60) |
|---|
| 2160p (4K) | 44–56 Mbps | 66–85 Mbps |
| 1440p (2K) | 20 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 1080p | 10 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 720p | 6.5 Mbps | 9.5 Mbps |
Best Shadowplay Recording Settings
- Set quality to custom.
- Set Resolution to 4K (even if you don't have a 4K screen!!)
- Set frame rate to 60FPS.
- Set bitrate to 130mbps (or whichever highest bitrate you can select)
Bitrate is the amount of data encoded for a unit of time, and for streaming is usually referenced in megabits per second (Mbps) for video, and in kilobits per second (kbps) for audio. From a streaming perspective, a higher video bitrate means a higher quality video that requires more bandwidth.
In telecommunications and computing, bit rate (bitrate or as a variable R) is the number of bits that are conveyed or processed per unit of time. The non-standard abbreviation bps is often used to replace the standard symbol bit/s, so that, for example, 1 Mbps is used to mean one million bits per second.
Your internet speed is key to determining what bitrate options you have. Head to Ookla Speed Test (speedtest.net), run a quick test and record your results. Your download speed is handy to know, but what you're really interested in is your upload speed which is measured in Mbps.
