Telstra has deactivated the Talking Clock service, which had been in continual operation for 66 years. The Talking Clock service allowed phone users to dial a number (1194) wherever they were and listen to a pre-recorded message announcing the time in that location, in precise, and reliable ten-second intervals.
Outside North America, "1-1-N" numbers are still in use, for these and other services. In most European countries, "1-1-N" numbers are related to emergency services and 112 is the emergency telephone number of the European Union and some non-EU countries across the world.
The BT Speaking Clock has kept time since 1936, when it was also known as “TIM” -- the three-letter code short for “time” which callers dialled on old-fashioned alphabetic phones.
123 is an international standard by the standardization sector of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU-T), entitled Notation for national and international telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and Web addresses.
