Australia beats New Zealand 50-49 at Netball World Cup in England. Australia's Netball World Cup defence remains on track following a thrilling 50-49 win over arch rival New Zealand ahead of the semi-finals in Liverpool.
Netball is a ball sport played by two teams of seven players. Netball is most popular in many Commonwealth nations, specifically in schools, and is predominantly played by women. Each team attempts to score goals by passing a ball down the court and shooting it through its goal ring.
It is awarded each year to the team that wins the most test matches between the two, excluding games played as part of multinational tournaments such as the Netball World Championships and Commonwealth Games.
The Silver Ferns have beaten Australia 53-52 in the first Constellation Cup test in Christchurch, the first time in four years New Zealand has achieved back to back victories over their old rivals. It comes off the Ferns stunning one goal victory over Australia to win the World Cup final in July.
New Zealand stunned holders and 11-time champions Australia to win the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool. The final was tense throughout and came down to the dying seconds and just one goal, as the Kiwis prevailed 52-51.
The Silver Ferns have won the World Cup five times (in 1967, 1979, 1987, 2003 and 2019), and have won the netball gold medal at the Commonwealth Games twice (in 2006 and 2010). The Silver Ferns are administered by Netball New Zealand, the national governing body for netball in the country.
The Silver Ferns have not won the Constellation Cup since 2012. After being on the back foot for much of the first half, the world champion showed their growing confidence and resilience with an emphatic second half reply.
A game of netball lasts for an hour. The match is split into fifteen minute quarters with a three-minute break between the first and second and the third and fourth quarters. Half-time between the second and third quarters lasts five minutes.
