The trouble with the Common Core is not primarily what is in these standards or what's been left out, although that's certainly at issue. The bigger problem is the role the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are playing in the larger dynamics of current school reform and education politics.
Are private schools exempt? Technically, private schools are not required to implement Common Core standards even in states where the program has been implemented. The SAT and ACT tests are influenced by Common Core, so many private schools find themselves teaching to the standards regardless.

So why do so many people hate the Common Core? While the goals of Common Core are laudable, many parents and teachers don't think they had a seat at the table when standards were developed. To parents and teachers who feel they were entirely left out of the process, the standards may feel heavy-handed.
As of May 12, 2015, three states have repealed Common Core. Nine additional member states have legislation in some stage of the process that would repeal Common Core participation. State school board voted to drop the program. However, state standards are still aligned with Common Core State Standards until 2021.
