If your CPU is rather new, the performance gains that come from upgrading to a newer one are going to be fairly minimal. But to do that, you'll have to have a motherboard that supports the upgrade. On another note, if you're upgrading for the sake of gaming, save your money and upgrade your graphics card instead.
CPU/motherboard upgrade is one of the most expensive. These are some of the reasons for upgrading your PC motherboard. Remember, however, that motherboards connect to the RAM, GPU, CPU, and other hardware, so it is vital to ensure compatibility when upgrading your motherboard.
Last, but not least, is the chip's integrated graphics. The Core i7-6700K comes with Intel HD 530 clocked at 1,150 MHz, and the company claims up to a 40-percent improvement over Intel HD Graphics 4000 as found in the Core i7-3770K.
The Core i7-6700K, then, is a four-core chip with hyperthreading that runs at 4.0GHz, with a boost clock of up to 4.2Ghz – that's where the chip will self-overclock one or more cores on demand and where possible, without exceeding the overall thermal design of the chip.
For starters, Z170 boards will support up to 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes, rather than the eight lanes of PCIe 2.0 provided by standard Z97 boards. (That is in addition to the 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes provided by the CPU, which remains the same with Skylake.)
It has been several years since Skylake was at the forefront of the CPU market. In the lead up to Coffee Lake's desktop launch, Intel announced that the Core i7-6700K and Core i5-6600K would be discontinued in 2018. The final Skylake shipments will go out one year from now, on the 6th of March 2020.
Officially, the recommended customer price of one boxed Intel Core i7-6700K processor (four cores with Hyper-Threading, 4.0GHz/4.20GHz, 8MB cache, Intel HD Graphics 530 core, unlocked multiplier) is $350, according to Intel's ARK.
Best Motherboards for the i7 6700K Processor:
- Asus ROG Maximus VIII Formula – The best gaming board, if money is no option.
- Gigabyte Z170 Gaming 7 – Powerful board with great audio.
- MSI Z170A Gaming M7 – Good for overclocking.
- Asus Z170-A ATX – Excellent mid-range motherboard.
- ASRock Fatl1ty – High-end with many features.
According to CamelCamelCamel, a price-tracker that monitors Amazon and its partners, the Core i7-6700K has been available for around $350 for several weeks now. At press time, the retailer charged $349.69 for the processor.
7th gen i7 7700k is the best among all of them. Basically the higher the generation the better the cpu is. Now, 7th Gen cpu is kabylake and 6th gen is skylake. So if you have a i7 6700k you can overclock it to 4.6 GHz and 7700k can be overclocked to 5.0 GHz.
How to perform a simple CPU upgrade
- Step 1 – Prep your patient. Thermal paste and BIOS updating.
- Step 2 – Install the CPU. Shutdown, remove chip and cooler, and be careful of those pins.
- Step 3 – Booting and bug fixing. Make sure fans are spinning, don't panic, and get it running.
- Step 4 – Testing… loving. Is your CPU running at its best?
Intel's proudly touting the new Skylake processor as its "6th-gen" Core chip.
