Oak park itself is safe, but it's surrounded by unsafe areas so getting in and out, not so great.
Oak Park is a beautiful, diverse town. It feels like a nice suburb, but it has great access to Chicago. Growing up there, it always felt like a safe and friendly place, although since it is so close to the city of Chicago, there is a little bit more crime than the average suburb has.

Homelessness and Crime
The tourist areas of Sacramento are largely safe, but you'll want to use street smarts downtown. Downtown Sacramento has some crime, especially at night after the working population leaves and the area empties out. Be careful parking your car downtown, where thefts are high. The Sacramento CA crime rate for 2017 was 675.6 per 100,000 population, a 5.68% decline from 2016. The Sacramento CA crime rate for 2016 was 716.29 per 100,000 population, a 2.86% decline from 2015. The Sacramento CA crime rate for 2015 was 737.36 per 100,000 population, a 19.94% increase from 2014.
Sacramento, often called “the SacTown” is somewhat safe to visit. There are safer areas of the city, and then there are less safe areas, and it's hard to pinpoint where the crime happens. The crime statistics show clearly that downtown is safer than the suburbs like Roseville.
The people in Oak Park (I have several friends who own homes in Oak Park) are very open-minded, educated, and there is a lot of diversity, which I really appreciate. Yes, it is a safe place to live, but keep in mind that crime can happen any where.
Oak Park is a village adjacent to the West Side of Chicago, Illinois. It is the 29th most populous municipality in Illinois as counted in the 2010 U.S. census.
