Established as the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race in 1891, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is the largest HBCU by enrollment and the largest among all agriculture-based HBCU colleges.
New Orleans is home to three historically black institutions, which account for just a few of more than 100 HBCUs that exist today. Tulane is often classified as a predominantly white institution, or PWI, due to its majority white student population.
Today, there are 107 HBCUs with more than 228,000 students enrolled. Fifty-six institutions are under private control, and 51 are public colleges and universities. Most (87) of the institutions are four-year colleges or universities, and 20 are two-year institutions.
