3M does make an automotive OEM double sided tape line of products, however im sure the home stuff you have will work, might not be as strong however (or hold up to water very well). But no, it will not damage your paint.
Removing 3M adhesive tape can be as simple as peeling it off. But, if the tape has a strong adhesive, or if it has been sitting on the material for a long time, you might leave a sticky residue behind. Remove the adhesive along with the 3M tape to restore the item.

If the surface is greasy, you will need a stronger solution like the 3M Citrus Base Cleaner to cut the oil. Finish off with the rubbing alcohol to ensure all residue are removed.
Can I remove Gorilla Tape? A. Gorilla Tape can be removed, but with some difficulty and it may leave some residue. To remove any excess residue, we recommend using the tape itself as a blotter.
Some mounting tape adhesives rub off under gentle pressure. If the adhesive doesn't rub or smears instead, stop rubbing it. Dip a rag in an eyeglass cleaner that contains alcohol.
