A ton is 2000 pounds (907.19 kg), so does it follow that a half-ton truck weighs 1000 pounds (453.5 kg)? Actually, the name doesn't refer to the weight of the truck. In fact, half-ton pickups weigh much more than that.

It actually is more "HD" than the new bodystyle 2500 of the same year. The 2500 replaced the 6-lug oldbodystyle 2500. The 2500HD replaced your truck. The main differences are that the HD has a larger axle and frame and more options as far a motors and trans.
New Member. The 2500 LD and 1500 HD are the same frame, with different cab/bed configurations. The 2500HD and 3500's have the taller frame.

Depending on its configurations under the hood, the 1500 model can tow just more than 12,000 pounds. As a heavy-duty pickup truck, the 2019 Silverado 2500 trim naturally has much stronger towing capabilities. This model is powerful enough to handle a trailer that weighs slightly more than 23,000 pounds.
A half-ton or 150/1500 model typically falls under an 8,500-pound GVWR. A three-quarter-ton or 250/2500 model ranges between 8,500 and 9,990 pounds. A one-ton or 350/3500 truck is likely to be 9,900 pounds or more.
Basically, if you want to tow a 5th wheel trailer, the best trucks are going to be long bed 3/4 or 1 tons like a Ford F-250/F-350, Chevy/GMC 2500/3500, or Ram 2500/3500. Half ton trucks could work but are not nearly as capable as the larger trucks.
