A New Kind of Riding Boot
The riding boot has been around for years and years (and years), but in 2020, it's getting reinvented. A little less prep and little more street style, this upgraded riding boot is sure to be everywhere in the new year. Most boots will wrinkle at the ankle and drop approximately 1-2 inches in height, so you'll need to ensure that they are tall enough to start with, so that the boots will still be at a good height after they break in.
Short boots are a great general purpose boot and are made to withstand many aspects of horse riding. Short boots are usually cheaper to buy than long leather riding boots, but this will depend on the features you require, the quality of the leather used and the manufacturer who has made the boots.
Depending on how much you want to shrink your boots, you can spray specific areas lightly or heavily. Then, use a blow dryer on medium heat and hold it six to nine inches away to shrink the leather. Try on the boots to see how they fit. If either boot is still too lose, spray and dry the boots again in the same way.
The best break-in practice that I incorporated in my daily routine was wearing my tall boots while walking the dogs. It gave me a good 30 minutes to an hour adjusting to the freshness of the leather and it allowed my boots to gain some bend in the back of the knee.
There are two main differences between these types of footwear: Jodhpur boots are generally made of finer leather and are more likely to be used only for riding. As the name suggests, they are designed to be worn with jodhpurs. Paddock boots have a thicker sole and are meant for wearing around the yard.

Put on a pair of thick socks to protect your feet, then put on your boots and zip them up as far as you can. The heat should help relax the fabric, allowing the boots to stretch around your calf.
Mid-calf boots are taller than booties with higher shafts, but not as tall as knee-high boots. If you're after conventionally flattering proportions, go with a low or mid heel mid-calf boot unless you have a relatively long leg line or wear a column of colour.
Take your knit elastic and wrap it around your lower thigh to measure it. Measure your thigh from around half an inch to an inch below where your thigh high boots reach up to. Make sure the elastic is pulled tight, so it will stay in place but still comfortable.

Once you are standing, wearing both boots, look for these three signs of a good fit: Your entire foot should feel snug in the boot EXCEPT for your heel. Don't worry! Consequently, if the ball of your foot sits too far forward in the boot, your toes will uncomfortably crowd in the toe box of the boot.
Problems With Tight Shoes
Pressure against the nail bed can cause the nail to grow into the skin, rather than out. Corns and calluses can also form on the toes as a barrier against a shoe that is too tight. Beyond callusing, a more permanent disfigurement called a bunion can form when you wear shoes that are too small.Knee-high boots must fit correctly at the calf. The top circumference of your sleek, knee-high boots should be snug around your calves. There shouldn't be more than a quarter of an inch of space at the top of the boot and that's pushing it. A slouchy style: slouchy boots are not meant to offer a sleek profile.

To find your size, measure the heel-to-toe mark and use the inch-to-size table. For example, if you are a man and your foot measures 10 1/4" long, you will wear a U.S. size 9 shoe. If your measurements are between two sizes, or you find one foot's measurement larger than the other, always move up to the larger size.
