You can use Garmin Express™ software to download and install the latest map and software updates for your device.
A Garmin device is eligible for a free update within 90 days of the first time it connects to a satellite. Garmin units with LMT, LM or LT in their model names are eligible for free lifetime map updates.
Current Version of Garmin Express for Windows: v7. 2.1 as of December 10th, 2020. The latest version of Garmin Express can also be downloaded and installed from the Garmin Express page.
The map update process takes an average of 3 hrs to complete. Garmin does about 150,000 map updates or activations a month.
Updating the Software Using Garmin Express
- Connect the device to your computer using the USB cable. When new software is available, Garmin Express sends it to your device.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Do not disconnect your device from the computer during the update process.

Issues with Garmin Express are usually attributed to out-of-date software or poor communication with a connected device. To resolve most issues with Garmin Express: USB charging cables do not allow Express to communicate with the device. Restart the computer and try again.
Updating the Software Using Garmin Express
- Connect the device to your computer using the USB cable. When new software is available, the Garmin Express application sends it to your device.
- After the Garmin Express application finishes sending the update, disconnect the device from your computer. Your device installs the update.
All you have to do is to choose the update from the website of Garmin you'd like the device to install. Select the option allowing you to update your GPS using satellite, and then type in your Garmin GPS' serial number. Wait for the notification telling that the update has been completed before turning off the unit.

Garmin usually has a two year cycle for upgrading its sports watches. The Forerunner 945 was released in April 2019 so this would imply and early 2020 launch, perhaps in the spring.
Garmin Express will not run on any of the ipad models. There is the Garmin Connect Mobile app for iOS but it is not compatible with the Edge 800. You will have to use a laptop to upload activities.

Update SD Card With WebUpdater
- Connect your Garmin GPS to your computer through the USB cable that came with the device.
- Go to the Garmin website (see Resources) and download the WebUpdater to your computer.
- Open the WebUpdater application by double-clicking it after it has finished downloading.
You can update the maps and software by connecting your device to a Wi-Fi® network that provides access to the Internet. This allows you to keep your device up to date without connecting it to a computer. To install only software updates, select Software > Install All.
The short answer is no, there is not a fee to use a Garmin GPS. That is, once you buy a Garmin, there's no recurring fee to use the device. You plug it in and use it. But if you want certain services, such as traffic or map updates, that go beyond the basic mapping features, you might have to pay a fee.
When purchasing a nuMaps Lifetime subscription through Garmin Express, the subscription will automatically be activated to the device. The updated maps can be installed immediately on Garmin Express after the purchase process. Devices that are preloaded with Lifetime maps do not need to be activated.

Magellan GPS units can be updated through the use of a free software program available on the Magellan website. Some of the Magellan software updates and minor map upgrades can be obtained for free, but most of the map updates must be purchased.
How to download free maps for a Garmin GPS: step-by-step instructions

Updates are free and easy to install. To update the software on your device, please use Garmin Express. Garmin Express provides the ability to check and offer software updates automatically each time you connect your device to the computer.
If you have an existing myGarmin profile from an older device, but don't have Express installed on your computer, you can do it manually. As the program installs on your computer, it will also update the GPS software on your Garmin to the current version.
