Using Recover Unsaved Documents option
- Open the Office app that you created the document. For example, Word.
- Create a new blank document.
- Click the File menu.
- Click on Info.
- Click the Manage Document option.
- Click the Recover Unsaved Documents option.
- Select the unsaved document to recover.
- Click the Open button.
Open the Office application that you were using. Click the File tab. Click Recent. Scroll to the bottom of your "Recent Documents" (Office 2013 only), then click "Recover Unsaved Documents" if you are in Word, "Recover Unsaved Workbooks" if you are in Excel, or "Recover Unsaved Presentations" if you are in PowerPoint.
How to recover an unsaved Word document using Microsoft Word 2010, Word 2013, and Word 2016
- Click the File tab / Manage Documents.
- Click the Manage Document button.
- From the drop down list, click Recover Unsaved Documents.
- The Open dialog box opens displaying a list of your unsaved recoverable Word documents.
AutoRecover can be enabled or disabled by using the following steps.
- Open Word and select “File” > “Options“.
- Choose “Save” on the left pane.
- Uncheck the box for “Save AutoRecover information every x minutes” if you wish to disable the AutoRecover feature. Check the box to enable it.
A corrupt file is one that has become unusable. Viruses, malware and programs closing prematurely can all corrupt a file. While the file is corrupt, you won't be able to use it. You can fix this problem and uncorrupt the file by using some free tools available online.
The Open and Repair command might be able to recover your file.
- Click File > Open > Browse and then go to the location or folder where the document (Word), workbook (Excel), or presentation (PowerPoint) is stored.
- Click the file you want, and then click the arrow next to Open, and click Open and Repair.
Steps to recover an unsaved Word document on Mac:
- Open a Finder window on your Mac.
- Select the entire computer as the location. That will be searched and enter 'AutoRecovery' in the Search field.
- Double-click on the file to be recovered. This will open the file in Microsoft Word.
- Select the File menu and choose Save As.

- Open Excel, and click "File" > "Info" > "Manage Workbook". Click "Recover Unsaved Workbooks" from the drop-down menu.
- Select the unsaved file and click the "Open" button. Then, on the pop-up window, choose "Save As" to recover it.
Start Word. Go to the File tab and select Manage Document. Select the Manage Document button.
Double-click on the drive containing your overwritten file, and browse out to its location. Right-click on the Word file, and select “Restore previous versions.” A list of available items will populate, along with their locations. Click on the version you'd like to restore, and click “Restore . . .”
Click File | Open. When the Open dialog box appears, select the troublesome Word document. But, instead of clicking OK, first select Recover Text From Any File from the Files Of Type drop-down list. If you don't have access to a non-Microsoft word processor, you can always try to open the file with Notepad or WordPad.

- Perform a check disk on the hard drive. Open Windows File Explorer, right click on the drive, and select Properties.
- Use the CHKDSK command.
- Use the SFC /scannow command.
- Change the file format.
- Use file repair software.
