HBC Check is a free public register, which allows you to check if there is a valid home building compensation cover for residential building work carried out in NSW since 1 July 2010.

If the builder's licence says "only for contracts not requiring home warranty insurance" on the public register, it means the builder has not yet been approved by an insurer and can't offer home warranty insurance.

Most suppliers give 'start up' credit to reputable builders. Be suspicious if the builder asks for a deposit for materials before you have agreed to give him the job. If they haven't got credit, they might have a bad reputation. You should not pay a deposit to someone you know nothing about.

Unless an exemption applies, a QBCC contractor's licence is required to carry out or undertake to carry out the construction, erection, renovation, alteration, extension, improvement or repair of an accordion, concertina, or operable wall if the value of the work exceeds $3,300 (including the cost of materials).
WHAT IS A FORM 4? A Form 4/4A is a notice to the QBCC that notifiable work has been performed at a property. The licensed plumbing and drainage contractor is responsible for submitting the Form 4/4A and paying the relevant fee to the QBCC.
Under the home warranty scheme, licensed contractors must pay a premium on behalf of the consumer for residential construction work they carry out. The scheme provides home owners with cover for loss where the licensed contractor does not complete the contracted works or fails to rectify defective work.
